LAWRENCE (CBS) -- A 13-year-old girl was struck and killed by a Commuter Rail train in Lawrence Friday afternoon, transit police said.

Police responded to the area of Inman Street, where the girl was hit by an outbound Western Route Haverhill Line train at 4:11 p.m. She was pronounced dead as a result of her injuries, police said.

The girl was struck as she and a friend were crossing the tracks. Authorities say the girls cut between two cars of a stationary train on the tracks and did not see the oncoming train.
