Son Admits Killing Winchester Mother: 'Sometimes I Get Out Of Control'
WOBURN (CBS) – A 46-year-old Winchester man is being held without bail charged with killing his 70-year-old mother Barbara. Matthew McAveeney pleaded not guilty just hours after he confessed to the murder before a group of reporters as he was led into the Winchester police station.
"Did you do it?" a reporter asked. "Yes," McAveeney said. "I murdered her."
That was the exchange with reporters last night where McAveeney also apologized to his mother saying, "Sometimes I get out of control." McAveeney apologized again as he was led out of Woburn District Court following his arraignment.
Inside the courtroom he protested when his court-appointed attorney waived the reading of the details of the case. "Hold on, it is my opinion I do not waive the reading. And I have already stated that I do not want this person as my attorney," he told the judge.
McAveeney was brought back to Winchester after a week-long manhunt, which ended in North Carolina where a tipster led police to a Walmart where the murder suspect was shopping. The medical examiner has determined that Barbara McAveeney was killed by blunt force trauma, her body left in her Swanton Street apartment for days before a well being check led to police to her.
McAveeney's capture was a relief to the victim's neighbors who were startled by the violence. "You never know if he flipped out it's possible he could have had it in for other people as well," said neighbor Charlie Basile.
When his arraignment on murder charges was over, McAveeney told the judge to "have a good day." When asked by reporters if he felt badly for what he says he did, he replied, "yes." He's due back in court for a probable cause hearing November 25.
