Boston Driver Convicted Of Motor Vehicle Homicide In Bicyclist's Death

BOSTON (AP) — A Boston man whose pickup truck struck and killed a bicyclist returning home from a late night fishing trip has been convicted of motor vehicle homicide.

Michael Ahern was convicted Thursday after a weeklong trial and one day of deliberations.

Prosecutors say Ahern struck 63-year-old Doan Bui on Morrissey Boulevard just after midnight Sept. 14, 2012. The impact threw Bui 150 feet.

Prosecutors say the 48-year-old Ahern had been drinking for hours before the crash and was driving 51 miles per hour in a 30 mph zone.

Ahern stayed at the scene and said during a 911 call that the cyclist had pulled in front of him.

Ahern is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 31. He was allowed to remain free on $25,000 bail but ordered to surrender his passport.
