Daily Talker: Should We Reinvent The Columbus Day Holiday?

Today is Columbus Day. Some people may think of this as just a day off. Others think about what they learned in school about Christopher Columbus and how he "sailed the ocean blue." But now, some cities are voting not to celebrate Columbus Day. Instead, they are trying to reinvent the holiday.

In Seattle and Minneapolis, the city councils voted to celebrate Indigenous People's Day this year. Their goal is to celebrate the culture and value of Indigenous people and reflect on their ongoing struggles. But, what about Columbus? People showed up at the city council meeting in Seattle waving Italian flags. They said they aren't against Indigenous People's Day. But, they felt slighted over the decision to honor Native Americans on what has been Columbus Day for more than 100 years. Today, 16 states do not recognize Columbus Day as a public holiday.

What do you think? Should we celebrate Columbus Day? Or reinvent the holiday?
