Man Charged With Killing Braintree Bicyclist Has Extensive Driving Record

BRAINTREE (CBS) – Brian Donovan says his brother William had a heart of gold.

The 53-year-old died Monday after being struck by a car while riding his bike in Braintree.

"He was the kind of guy who would give you the shirt off his back and then go home and find another one to give you," Brian said.

Police say the driver, 41-year-old Edward King of Braintree, has been charged with driving under the influence of prescription drugs and failing to yield to bicyclist.

Records show King had dozens of convictions dating back to the early 90s. In addition, he was arrested on Friday night for a similar offense but posted bail.

"I just miss seeing him and talking to him," Brian said about his brother.

William's mother Mary says her son loved to ride his bicycle.

"He was a wonderful son. He used to call me every morning. He was very caring person. He loved riding his bike and go on bike trips," Mary Donovan said.

The family says William was on his way to church in Weymouth when he was struck and killed.

Police are investigating the crash. King is currently being held on $11,000 cash bail.

"I hope he regrets what he did and he gets punished," Mary said.
