Boston Harbor Island Evacuated After Bridge Closure

BOSTON (CBS) – Boston's Long Island has been evacuated after a bridge was closed due to concerns about its structural integrity.

The Mayor's Office says the decision to close the Long Island Bridge was made out of an abundance of caution and there is not one incident, injury or collapse that led to the closure.

The bridge connects Moon and Long Island in the Boston Harbor.

On a typical night, Long Island is home to approximately 440 shelter guests and approximately 250-300 people who receive services through the Boston Public Health Commission and other non-profit organizations.

Those who were evacuated from the island were brought to several locations including the South End Fitness Center and the Carter Auditorium at Northampton Square.

Approximately 150 people work on Long Island during a typical day.

The bridge is expected to be closed for an extended period of time. City and state officials will meet Thursday to discuss possible bridge repairs.
