Colvin On Dobson-McDaniels Spat: Probably More To It Than Just 'Mouthing Off'

BOSTON (CBS) - There's a lot of controversy surrounding this New England Patriots team, as well as an unprecedented level of second-guessing from the fans about whether Bill Belichick has lost his fast ball and if Tom Brady is over the hill.

There's even reports that wide receiver Aaron Dobson had a war of words with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, leading to his benching in Weeks 3 and 4.

98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich had on former Patriots linebacker Rosevelt Colvin to discuss the Patriots turmoil, and while he's unaware of the actual circumstance between Dobson and McDaniels, he says it's not uncommon for coaches and players to have back-and-forths.

"The dynamics of each locker room are different. Different rosters, different makeup, so you've got younger guys and older guys. I think the maturity level, regardless of what year you are into the league, comes in to play. But that didn't stop altercations or incidents from happening," said Colvin Friday morning. "From what I remember, we had a lot of dialogue with the coaches. Was everything always cordial? No. But at the end of the day what everyone has to understand is that the team is in it together. Whether there's a spat or a fight, working together to try and put the best team on the field is the goal."

The Patriots dressed just three wide receivers in Monday night's 41-14 massacre at the hands of the Chiefs, and haven't been able to generate much offensively all season. So it stands to reason that Dobson, a former second round pick with tons of upside, could be a contributor.

However, Colvin suggests there's got to be more to it than just "mouthing off" to the play caller.

"It's unfortunate. A lot of times you're a young guy trying to make a name for yourself, trying to get on the field and you can't afford situations like that," said Colvin. "If he was a guy that was on time all the time, never messed up, never forgot things and was always where he was supposed to be, then it may not be that big of an issue. So maybe there's some other things underlying in there that caused them to get into it, because they want to put the best product on the field, but also want everyone on the same page."

Thursday night on the Sports Hub, Adam Jones and Adam Kaufman also explored the Aaron Dobson situation.

Was it a benching because of attitude? Or poor performance in practice?

If it's the latter, then Jones is not so sure why the Patriots media members are circling the wagons, because that would mean another bad draft pick for the team. For the sake of Dobson and the Patriots, Jones is hoping it's simply an attitude problem.
