Ben Affleck Refused To Wear Yankees Hat In New Film 'Gone Girl'
BOSTON (CBS) -- It's generally understood that actors will do whatever it takes to fully master a role, but for Ben Affleck, there's clearly one place he's simply not willing to go.
He just can't bring himself to wear a New York Yankees hat.
Affleck got into just one fight with director David Fincher during the filming of "Gone Girl," according to The New York Times, and it was based on his unwillingness to wear the ball cap of his most hated team.
"That was the only fight David and I had, and it was a legitimate fight," Affleck told the Times of Fincher's request for the character to wear a Yankees hat. "I said, 'David, I love you, I would do anything for you. But I will not wear a Yankees hat. I just can't. I can't wear it because it's going to become a thing, David. I will never hear the end of it. I can't do it.' And I couldn't put it on my head."
(That sound you just heard was millions of Red Sox fans standing and saluting Affleck.)
Affleck, of course, is a Boston man through and through. He grew up in Cambridge, attended Cambridge Rindge and Latin, got his big break starring in the Boston-set "Good Will Hunting" and has since used his home city as the setting for "Gone Baby Gone" and "The Town."
The 42-year-old said he was willing to do whatever it took to convince Fincher that the hat of the Bronx Bombers would not end up on his head.
"It was an uprising. It was a coup. I rioted," Affleck told the Times. "It was a one-man riot against the Yankees."
Affleck won the fight. His prize? He had to wear a Mets hat.
