Bruins Sign Torey Krug, Reilly Smith To One-Year Deals

BOSTON (CBS) - Torey Krug and Reilly Smith will be wearing the Black and Gold for at least one more season.

Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli announced Monday morning that the team has signed defenseman Torey Krug and forward Reilly Smith to one-year contracts through the 2014-15 season, each worth an annual cap hit of $1.4 million.

Krug, who turned 23 in April, was named to the NHL All Rookie team in June, and led all rookie defensemen with 14 goals, 26 assists, six power-play goals and 13 power-play assists.

Smith was acquired in 2013 along with Loui Eriksson, Matt Fraser and Joe Morrow from Dallas in exchange for Tyler Seguin, Rich Peverley and Ryan Button. In his first full NHL season with the B's in 2013-14, Smith recorded 20 goals, 31 assists and a plus-28 rating -- all career highs.

Both the team and the players were limited in their options this offseason. Krug and Smith were restricted free agents, but neither was able to negotiate with any other teams because they were entry-level free agents. The Bruins, meanwhile, remain tight against the salary cap, thereby limiting the team from making offers suitable to Krug and Smith.

Yet with the opening night of the season still 10 days away, the team was able to come to a short-term agreement with both players.
