Electrical Outlet Sparked Fatal Ashburnham Fire

ASHBURNHAM (CBS) – The state fire marshal's office announced on Saturday that a fatal Ashburnham fire started at an electrical outlet inside a child's room.

Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan and interim Ashburnham Fire Chief Jerry Decoteaux said that an elderly woman who lived at 151 Wilker Road was killed around 6 p.m. Friday night during a fire.

Another woman was injured as a result of the flames, along with two children. All three were transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.

An investigation revealed that the fire began in an electrical outlet that had a power strip plugged into it. The outlet was located behind a television inside a child's room.

It remains unclear if the home had working smoke detectors, fire officials said.

According to the fire marshal's office, 19% of fire deaths in homes were caused by electrical fires.
