2 Girls Hit By Car At Methuen School Bus Stop

METHUEN (CBS) - Two girls were hit by a car at their school bus stop in Methuen Wednesday morning.

It happened near the corner of East Street and Meadowbrook. The girls were crossing the street to get to their bus stop, but were not in the crosswalk.

A fire official told WBZ-TV an 11-year-old girl suffered serious head trauma.

She was transported to Lawrence General Hospital with life threatening injuries, according to police, and then airlifted to Tufts Medical Center where she is listed in critical condition.

A 13-year-old girl was being treated for a femur fracture and other injuries, according to the official. The girl was taken by ambulance to Lawrence General Hospital and eventually transferred to Tufts in stable condition.

Police believe solar glare likely caused the driver to hit the girls.

Both girls attend Timony Grammar School in Methuen.

The driver of the truck that hit the girls stopped and called 911. Police said he is "completely cooperating," gave a statement at the police station and was allowed to leave.

East Street was closed near Bates Street a result of the incident.

According to police, the girls were thrown about 60 feet after they were hit. Flip flops belonging to one of the girls remained in the street while police conducted their investigation.

Eileen Taylor was running late to work. Now, she's glad she was, as she was there to help the girls before first responders arrived. Taylor is a physician's assistant and said she knew the injuries were bad.

"I went into slash doctor slash mother mode, probably mother mode superseding," said Taylor.

She said the girl with the broken leg kept asking for her cousin. Taylor said she held the girl's hand and kept on talking.

"It's one to thing to not feel good. It's another thing to be a little kid and be afraid," said Taylor.

At that moment she said she just wanted to comfort the girl and make sure she stayed still.

"The people that she needed – they got there, and they did a fantastic job and I just hope and pray they (the girls) are OK," said Taylor.
