Felger & Mazz: Is Darrelle Revis Living Up To The Hype?

BOSTON (CBS) -  Lost in the shuffle of the Patriots' offensive woes is the stellar play of the defense, who after a rough Week 1 has turned things around in the last two games, allowing just 9 points to Oakland and 7 points to Minnesota.

The defense has not given up a touchdown in the last seven quarters, and ranks near the top of the league in both yards and points allowed.

Now, nobody would confuse Ryan Tannehill, Matt Cassell or Derek Carr for Peyton Manning and the 2013 Denver Broncos, but defense and special teams is largely (perhaps the only) reason the Patriots are sitting here at 2-1.

One thing becoming obvious is that Darrelle Revis doesn't look like the Darrelle Revis of old.

Tannehill did not shy away from throwing his direction in Week 1, and neither did Derek Carr yesterday afternoon. Carr targeted Revis six times in total and completed five passes for 63 yards -- not exactly "shutdown corner" numbers.

98.5 The Sports Hub's Marc Bertrand of the Felger & Massarotti program thought the Patriots would be getting more when they signed Revis.

"I thought he was rather mediocre yesterday. Very un-Revis like. This is a serious question. I wonder if Darrelle Revis is living off the reputation he built as a member of the Jets playing for Rex Ryan. I didn't see a ton of him in Tampa Bay over the last couple years, but what I saw was not all that impressive," said Beetle.

"He looks rather average as a player. He does not look like a guy who has transformed the Patriots defense. He does not look like a guy that is making this team into a wagon. He is just not that guy right now. I don't know if that's going to change, but I look at him and say, 'Maybe he's over the hill.'"
