Pleasant Week Ahead

2014_FIRST FROST_WIDE

Yesterday morning was a chiller as premium radiational cooling conditions resulted in temperatures tumbling to near freezing. Many places got nipped by frost making it one of the earliest frosts in many years compared to the average first frost dates. The big high pressure system which provided the very dry air and clear night sky moved offshore enabling rapid temperature rises during the morning. In many cases, the temperature rose 35-40 degrees from the morning mins. That is not the case this morning with a very different air mass in place. It's more humid and destined to become muggier during this final full day of summer. It will warm up to the middle 70s with a cloudy to partly sunny sky. The south-southeasterly breeze will be lighter than yesterday. The high humidity is short-lived as it will be shoved out to sea tomorrow morning by a cold front and the rest of the week will feature very dry air with dew points returning to the 40s.

hrrr_ref_neng_15Showers will be scattered today but the risk is greatest in an axis from south central CT northeastward through Worcester County into eastern NH and into ME.  Consequently, have some rain gear handy if you are going to the NH Motor Speedway in Loudon for some great NASCAR or starting out from Hopkinton on the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk. Wet weather is less likely at Gillette Stadium as the Pats host the Raiders for a 1PM kickoff. The 10th Annual Hub On Wheels citywide bike ride should be far enough east outside the main axis of showers but a stray shower could ruin that. With all of these and other events scheduled, rain would be a spoiler but it is definitely needed after a long dry spell. Five out of the last 6 months have been drier to much drier than average. Check out Eric Fisher's blog from 3 days ago regarding the rain deficit. The zone of rain associated with a developing storm offshore might brush the outer Cape later today. The strip of showers and storms in NY will likely dry up as they enter western New England this evening. The front will pass off the coastline tomorrow morning and drier, breezy conditions will set in with the most sunshine in the afternoon with highs near 75 in eastern New England but much cooler weather across northwestern portions of the region.

2013_PATRIOTS_GAMEDAY2High pressure is going to build into the Northeast creating a long spell of pleasant weather this week. Daytime highs will be near 70 except a few degrees lower at the coast Wednesday and Thursday. On both of those days, there could be varying amounts of high cloudiness from thin to thick which would filter or dim the sunshine over southern New England. This should disappear so brighter sunshine will rule Friday and Saturday when it will be warming to the upper 70s to lower 80s. A cold front will drop down from Canada to cool it off to the middle 60s a week from today.

On this date in 1938, the Hurricane Of 1938 made landfall on Long Island and New England. One year ago today, Boston's high temperature was 77 degrees so similar weather is on tap for today.
