Gresh & Zo: Devin McCourty Talks Home Opener, Limiting Penalties And More

BOSTON (CBS) - Safety Devin McCourty called in to 98.5 The Sports Hub's Gresh & Zolak show Wednesday morning for a Patriots discussion covering a number of different topics.

On His Interception Against Vikings:

"It was devastation when I got to the sideline and realized I didn't get in the endzone, but it was a big play in the game and helped turn the game around. I gotta try and get in the endzone next time."

On Defensive Gameplans Week-to-Week:

"Each week teams present different challenges. Oakland has two really good running backs, a fullback that's not like many fullbacks in the league. He can line up at fullback, tight end and wide receiver. Our coaching staff does a great job doing what they feel is best defensively to beat that team."

On Pressuring The Quarterback:

"We love it [as a secondary]. There's time we're in games covering the guys pretty good and Rob [Ninkovich] or [Chandler Jones] gets a coverage sack. They'll come back and tell us, 'Good job.' It's the same thing for us. When they're over there getting pressure we're running up to the guys at the line of scrimmage high-fiving, because we realize to play good pass defense it's gonna come with them getting pressure and us covering guys."

On Darrelle Revis:

"He's a great player. He's doing a good job covering guys up. It allows me to play and know where I can be to help our defense the best way possible. Any time you've got a good football player it gives you the chance to be a really good defense."

On Patriots Leading League In Penalties:

"We've got to get on track with that. Going into this week with Oakland we can't afford to come out and give yards away penalty-wise. Coach Belichick is on us, about playing our techniques and not creating dumb penalties, being a smart football team out there and going back to the fundamentals. We're gonna need to do a good job practicing this week and staying penalty free so it goes over into the game."

On Being A Captain:

"It's an honor. Whenever your teammates vote you to be a captain it means they trust you, and they're selecting you to be a representative of them, and their voices if we gotta talk to the head coach. On the field they're selecting you as a leader, as a guy that keeps the team on pace and moving forward each week. It's an honor. I try to lead by example and go out there and do the right thing."

On Having 2 Road Games To Start The Year:

"It was different. We love playing at home in front of the home crowd. We're really excited this week to come back and play in front of the home crowd. We've got an AFC opponent coming in here. They're 0-2, so they're gonna be ready to go. They're gonna come in here, give us their best and try to get a win on the road. So it should be an exciting game to open the season at home."
