NHL Announces New Rule Changes

BOSTON (CBS) -- NHL teams will be hitting the ice soon for the 2014-15 season, and they'll be doing so under some new rules.

On Thursday, the league announced its changes to the rules for the upcoming season. Some of the more significant ones are listed below.

Rule 76 – Faceoffs

Following an icing, the center on the team that committed the icing will not be thrown out of the ensuing faceoff. That center will instead be issued a warning, in an effort to curb delay tactics for the tired team that iced the puck. A second faceoff violation will result in a two-minute minor bench penalty.

Rule 84 – Overtime

Teams will switch ends prior to the start of overtime in the regular season, and  the entire ice surface will undergo a "dry scrape" prior to the start of the OT period.

Rule 57 – Tripping

If a player dives for the puck but trips the puck carrier in the process in a situation that would normally result in a penalty shot, the penalty shot will no longer be awarded. Instead, it will be a two-minute minor penalty for tripping, so long as the diving player makes contact with the puck first.

Rule 24 – Penalty Shot

The 'Spin-O-Rama' move will no longer be legal in shootouts or penalty shots.

Rule 64 – Diving / Embellishment

The supplementary discipline will be increased to try to prevent repeat offenders of the diving/embellishment rule. Players will be fined as follows: the first incident draws a warning, the second a $2,000 fine, the third a $3,000 fine, the fourth a $4,000 fine, and subsequent offenses will draw $5,000 fines. Head coaches will be fined, too, on a lower scale.

Rule 85 – Puck Out of Bounds

The faceoff will remain in the attacking zone when the puck leaves play via a shot that deflects out of play off side of the net or off a stick of the attacking team, when the shot breaks the glass, and when the shot becomes wedged in or on the exterior of the goal net.

Rule 1.8 – Rink - Goalkeeper's Restricted Area

The trapezoid will be expanded by two feet from the goal post on both sides of the net.
