Pedroia To Undergo Season-Ending Wrist Surgery On Thursday

BOSTON (CBS) -- Dustin Pedroia's 2014 season is over.

The Red Sox second baseman will undergo surgery on his left wrist on Thursday, manager John Farrell announced Wednesday afternoon following Boston's 10-6 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

"He's going to have a procedure done here [Thursday] by Dr. Leibman in Boston that will address what he's dealing with right now," said Farrell. "I don't know any more specifics that that. There will certainly be a follow up after that's completed tomorrow."

Pedroia underwent an MRI on Tuesday, which showed that the inflammation in his left hand and wrist has worsened. Pedroia has dealt with injuries in that area for much of the year, but the fact that the situation appears to be worsening lead to Wednesday's decision.

The 31-year-old Pedroia is no stranger to hand/wrist injuries. He suffered a torn thumb ligament on opening day last season but played through it all the way through the World Series. He underwent surgery following the year, but the shortened offseason (thanks to the long postseason run) limited his recovery time. He's seen his OPS drop steadily over the past three seasons, and Farrell admitted that such grip issues very likely played a factor.

"Oh, it's had an impact. There's no doubt," Farrell said ahead of Tuesday's loss to the Baltimore Orioles. "To what extent, it's hard to say, but like I said, he's dealt with this for some time."

Pedroia played in 135 games this season, batting .278 -- 21 points lower than his career .299 average -- with seven home runs and 33 doubles.
