Rosevelt Colvin: Tom Brady's Veteran Experience Makes Logan Mankins Trade Possible

Former Patriots linebacker Rosevelt Colvin joined Toucher & Rich on Friday for his first weekly interview of the season.

With Tom Brady's calf injury popping up on Thursday and putting a scare into many fans in New England, Colvin was asked if he thinks the injury is a big deal.

"I think there's got to be a little bit of a concern, but at the end of the day you're dealing with one of the greatest to ever play the game," Rosevelt said. "I'm feeling that maybe Bill [Belichick] and the training staff are erring on the side of caution and sort of giving him an extra day of rest, hoping that he understands the game plan."

Colvin was then asked about the Logan Mankins trade and how such a shake-up can affect a locker room and the team on the field. Colvin said the established presence of Tom Brady makes the trading of Mankins possible.

"The dynamics of a team are really what's most important," Colvin said. "I think what's been always consistent the last few years in New England has been Bill and Tom. I think with a team, regardless of what city you're in, if you consistently have a head coach and a quarterback that's a veteran that is savvy, you can sort of get away with having younger, inexperienced players. The quarterback's going to know the void, he's going to be able to think, 'OK, I've got a rookie guard in front of me, or I've got an inexperienced guard, I've got to make sure if he's got a bad matchup, I've got to get rid of the ball, I can't go here, I can't go there.' When you have a rookie quarterback, moves like this up front when it comes to linemen creates an issue, because that kid's not thinking as fast as the older person is going to think."

As for the shock value of the trade, Colvin said that basically everyone not named Brady is fair game to be shipped out for any number of reasons.

"The locker room understands, because you typically have a lot of veterans in the locker room, they understand that number one, it's a business," Colvin said. "Bill's not necessarily too loyal to anyone. At the end of the day, he wants to win ballgames, and you can't knock him for that. You've just got to understand the process and how they go about things."
