NEW BEDFORD (CBS) – A search is underway for a young boy that jumped into the waters off New Bedford on Saturday afternoon but never resurfaced.

At around 6 p.m., a woman reported to New Bedford Police she had seen a young boy jump off the New Bedford pier near Fort Taber, surface and then go back under, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. The witness told authorities the boy never resurfaced. She also told authorities she believed the kid was 12 or 13 years old.

A 47-foot boat from the Meneshma coast guard station on Martha’s Vineyard began searching the area along with an MH-60 helicopter from the Cape Cod Air Station, according to the Coast Guard.

Crews plan to continue the search overnight, according to the Coast Guard. State and local authorities plan to join the search on Sunday morning.
