BOSTON (CBS) – The MBTA warned commuter rail passengers Wednesday that significant delays are likely throughout the afternoon after two trains collided near South Station.

Amtrak senior communications officer Craig Schulz said Wednesday afternoon that an MBTA train struck an Amtrak train inside the Southampton Street yard around 12:50 p.m., impeding tracks in the area.

Both trains were empty at the time and no injuries were reported.

The collision resulted in minor damage to the trains.

Schulz and MBTA officials said that as a result, the afternoon commute will be significantly delayed.

Old Colony lines will be most impacted by the collision.

Fairmount Line passengers will be required to use shuttle bus service between South Station and New Market during the afternoon hours.
