Somerville Police, Sheriff's Department Swap Groceries For Unwanted Guns

SOMERVILLE (CBS) – Somerville police and the Middlesex Sheriff's Department swapped groceries for guns Saturday in a no-questions-asked buyback event.

Residents were invited to trade in unwanted firearms or rifles for grocery gift certificates. In total, authorities collected 14 firearms.

Part of the deal was an agreement not to prosecute anyone without a firearm license for illegal possession of a weapon.

"Removing unwanted guns from a home can prevent those weapons from falling into the wrong hands and save lives," said Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone.

All of the guns collected will be destroyed.

The event was held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Somerville Police Headquarters.
