RANDOLPH (CBS) – A Franklin man faces charges after his car crashed into an MBTA bus in Randolph injuring more than a dozen people.

Shortly before 11 a.m. Tuesday, Stephen Griswold, 30, of Franklin was heading south on North Main Street when his crossed into the northbound lane and collided head on with the Route 240 bus, MBTA Transit police said.

Randolph police said that 18 people reported injuries. There were 34 people on the bus at the time of the crash and 13 were transported to local area hospitals for non-life-threatening injuries, the MBTA said. Many reported having neck and back discomfort.

A man working in a pizza parlor near the scene of the crash said there was glass everywhere and the glass from the bus was out.

He said the bus driver was escorted off the bus and taken to an ambulance.

Another witness, Alain Dor, said he could see people “flying around on the bus” when the crash happened. “I could see people yelling, people bleeding, it was pretty bad,” he said.

MBTA officials said Griswold told police that he became dizzy prior to the accident.

Griswold was arrested for operating under the influence of drugs. He is expected to be arraigned Wednesday at Quincy District Court.

One man who helped untangle Griswold from the air bags in his car, Jorge Barbosa, said “he seemed a little out of it, didn’t seem very aware of what was going on.”

An investigation of the accident is underway, the MBTA said.

The Randolph crash was the second accident involving an MBTA bus Tuesday. Earlier in the day a man stepped in front of a bus in Roxbury but fortunately his injuries are not believed to be serious.
