Report: Brady Out, Mallett To Start In Patriots Preseason Opener

BOSTON (CBS) - According to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald, Ryan Mallett will get first team offensive snaps in the Patriots preseason opener Thursday night at FedEx Field, meaning Tom Brady will get the night off.

Brady has sat out three preseason openers before (2005, 2008 and 2011), and clearly doesn't need the reps after being terrific all week in joint practices with the Redskins. Brady completed 60 of his 80 passes in drills through the first two days and apparently proved he doesn't need the extra work.

The Patriots rarely carry three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, so perhaps playing Mallett with the no. 1's in the exhibition opener is a way to showcase the fourth year pro in a trade.

Mallett is 1-for-4 with 17 yards passing and 1 interception in four games played in his NFL career, but is excited for the opportunity to prove himself in the preseason.

Tune in to Patriots-Redskins Thursday night at 7:30pm on WBZ-TV and 98.5 The Sports Hub — the flagship stations of the New England Patriots. Pregame coverage begins on 98.5FM at 4:30pm, with three hours of postgame analysis following the game. WBZ-TV gets things started with a special edition of Patriots GameDay at 7pm, following by Patriots 5th Quarter after the game.
