Scuba Diver Dies In Apparent Drowning Off Marblehead

MARBLEHEAD (CBS) – A 58-year-old Westfield man died Tuesday in an apparent drowning while scuba diving about 2 miles off Marblehead Harbor.

The Essex District Attorney's Office said the man was scallop diving with two other men near Satan's Rock in Salem Sound behind Children's Island.

At about 10:15 am, the driver of the boat called in "diver down" to the Marblehead Harbormaster after one of the divers failed to surface.

Marblehead Harbormaster Patrol Boats and a Marblehead Public Safety boat responded along with the Salem Harbormasters, the Beverly Fire Department Dive Rescue team, the Coast Guard out of Gloucester, the state Environmental Police and the state police dive team.

The state police dive team recovered the body at 2:30 pm.

The circumstances of the diver's death remain under investigation, the DA's office said.  Foul play is not suspected.

Authorities are withholding the identity of the diver pending notification of his family.
