Dorchester Man Charged In Hit-And-Run Crash That Seriously Hurt Teen On Scooter
BOSTON (CBS) – A Dorchester man was held on $10,000 bail Thursday morning, one day after he allegedly was involved in a hit-and-run crash that left a 15-year-old with serious injuries.
Manuel Alfonseca, 34, was charged in Dorchester Municipal Court in the Wednesday night crash at the intersection of Kingsdale and Standish streets where the teen was on a motor scooter when he was struck.
He is charged with leaving the scene of a collision causing personal injury, leaving the scene of a collision causing property damage, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license as a subsequent offense, and civil infractions, the Suffolk District Attorney's office said.
Police say Alfonseca fled the crash scene in his car. They credit neighbors with giving them a description of the red Infiniti involved in the crash that helped them track down the car.
"The little boy on the scooter was turning and they just smacked right into each other," Sierra Braxton said. "He just ran, he sped off, his windshield was all cracked and the boy flew in the air onto the ground."
Investigators say officers spotted the speeding car weaving in and out of marked lanes on Blue Hill Avenue. The driver of the Infinit led them on a chase before crashing into another car in Jamaica Plain on Glenside Avenue and taking off on foot, investigators said.
According to investigators, the teen will survive but prosecutor Brian Brodigan said his injuries were so severe that the homicide unit was dispatched to the scene after the crash.
Police have not released the name of the teen, who was taken to Boston Medical Center.
Alfonseca's defense attorney, Kathryn Sullivan, said he may have fled the scene because he was nervous.
"When I first met Mr. Alfonseca, the first thing he asked me was the condition of the victim," Sullivan said. He was very concerned about the incident that transpired."
Alfonseca has previous convictions for operating without a license and reckless operation, the district attorney's office said. He has also served prison time for breaking and entering as well as for gun and drug charges, according to the DA's office.
Alfonseca's attorney did not think he'd be able to raise the additional $9,000 bail, so she requested another court hearing on Aug. 5.
