New Bedford Mother Accused Of Lying About Newborn's Remains
NEW BEDFORD (AP) — Prosecutors say a 22-year-old woman lied to police after her newborn baby's body was found in April outside a New Bedford apartment house where she lived.
Tamlyn Gonzalez pleaded not guilty Monday to obstruction of justice. She was released without bail and ordered to undergo probation monitoring, continue counseling and medication she has been prescribed.
Prosecutor Maryclare Flynn said Gonzalez first denied the baby girl was hers, but later said she gave birth alone in the bathtub of her apartment. Gonzalez said the umbilical cord was wrapped around the neck of the child, who wasn't breathing.
Flynn said Gonzalez kept the baby hidden in a box for two weeks, believing she might revive. The prosecutor said Gonzalez moved the remains when her mother complained of a bad odor.
Prosecutors said autopsy results on the baby are not complete.
