High-Quality Fake IDs Pose Problems For Canton Police, Parents And Store Owners

CANTON (CBS) – A wave of highly sophisticated fake IDs are causing problems in one Boston suburb.

Canton police say the IDs are so well made that even scanners can't tell they are fake.

And they say teens are stashing large amounts of liquor at the homes of unsuspecting residents.

Shinder Singh has a stack of fake IDs, all confiscated from underage drinkers trying to buy alcohol at his Canton liquor store.

"Every week we at least catch one, one or two," he said.

But over the past few years, they have become harder to spot.

"They all scan, so all the bar codes if you run then through the machine they will all scan, tell you the ages that's written on the ID" Singh said.

Canton police say they've noticed a big spike in underage drinking due to the phony identification.

It's caused enough concern that the police chief sent out a warning on Facebook.

Police say part of the problem is teens are buying the liquor and then dropping it at specified locations.

Sometimes the homeowners are unaware and suspicious when the teens try to pick it up. One even led to a breaking and entering call.

Parents already focused on the hazards of underage drinking now have something new to look out for.

Store managers like Singh say the ease of getting these IDs means the problem isn't going away anytime soon.

Canton police are investigating the source of the fake IDs.

They are warning teenagers that underage drinking has consequences including criminal charges.
