The situation in Iraq is spiraling out of control, pushing the country to the brink of civil war.
Islamic extremists have taken control of several major cities, and are threatening to move toward Baghdad. They want Iraq to be run by strict Islamic law, and seem to be better equipped and organized than ever.
The Iraqi government is begging Washington for help, and President Obama is weighing a range of options, including airstrikes.
Speaking in the Oval Office, the president said: “We do have a stake in making sure that these jihadists are not getting a permanent foothold.”
However, officials are firmly ruling out putting American troops back on the ground in Iraq. Nearly all US troops left Iraq in December of 2011.
