3-Year-Old Boy Killed In Saugus Crash

SAUGUS (CBS) -- A 3-year-old boy was killed in a head-on crash in Saugus.

Police say the toddler was in a Volvo that collided with a Ford Explorer late Monday night on Walnut Street.

According to an initial investigation, the Volvo left its lane and slammed into the Ford Explorer. Authorities are investigating whether the vehicle had a mechanical problem.

The District Attorney's office says the child was buckled into a seat but that type of seat is under investigation.

The Volvo's driver, a 43-year-old Lynn man, was not hurt but the driver of the Ford Explorer, Daniel Leal Ortega, 40, of Lynn, was treated at a local hospital. Ortega was arrested on an outstanding warrant out of Danvers for driving without a license. He was also charged with driving without a license at the time of Monday night's crash.

Ortega was arraigned Tuesday in Lynn District Court and held on $1,000 cash bail. According to prosecutors, he was in the United States illegally from Mexico and will be turned over to ICE if he makes bail.

Ortega was previously detained by ICE and re-entered the U.S. illegally before, according to court documents.
