Red Sox Put Middlebrooks On DL With Fractured Finger

BOSTON (CBS/AP) – The Red Sox put third baseman Will Middlebrooks on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a fractured right index finger.

Infielder Brock Holt was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket to fill Middlebrooks' spot on the 25-man roster. He started at third base in Saturday night's game against the Detroit Tigers at Fenway Park.

Middlebrooks suffered the injury in the first inning of Friday night's game against Detroit when he attempted to field a line drive. In 21 games starting at third base, Middlebrooks was hitting .197 with two home runs, and nine RBI.

Red Sox manager John Farrell was unsure how long Middlebrooks will be sidelined, but said he'll be in a splint for five to seven days before attempting anything.

"Depending on how he responds to treatment after that, that's when we'll first look to initiate any baseball activities," Farrell said. "It's hard to say how long he'll be down."

Holt was up with the Red Sox earlier this season when Middlebrooks was on the DL with a right calf stratin from April 5-19. He hit .348 (8 for 23) during that stretch with four RBIs.
