Passengers Rescue Woman Who Fell On MBTA Tracks

BOSTON (CBS) - A 44-year-old woman escaped serious injury when she suddenly fell into the train pit at Back Bay station on the Orange Line.

Surveillance cameras capture the woman's misstep and a band of good Samaritans jumping to her rescue putting their own safety at risk.

Fortunately, she did not come in contact with the third rail, and there was no train on immediate approach.

"Admirable, a lot of people not knowing for sure if a train was coming willing to jump in there and help her," said rider Craig Sunderlind.

They quickly grabbed her bag, then grabbed her and hoisted the struggling woman back onto the platform.

"I would like to say I'd have the same reaction," said rider Eric Barros.

"I think it's something you do or don't do at the time. I don't think you know until it happens," said rider Anna Barto.

In this case it happened fast, and riders didn't hesitate.

The woman who fell, Mary Moore, is blind in one eye and told WBZ-TV she slipped on the platform and after she fell she couldn't get back up.

She said she is still sore on her side and had to get a few stitches in her head.

Moore said she is astonished at all of those  who rushed to her safety and very thankful.

"Thankful to God I am alive and thankful for all those gentlemen who hopped in there, risking their lives to get me out of the way," Moore said.
