HAVERHILL (CBS) – Investigators say the improper disposal of smoking materials caused a massive fire at an apartment complex in Haverhill last week.

Last Wednesday, a fire destroyed two 10-unit buildings at 21 Forest Acres Drive, displacing more than 40 residents. The fire also ignited a 10-acre brush fire in the woods behind the building.

A young mother jumped from a third floor balcony with her young son in her arms to escape the flames. The boy suffered minor injuries, but the mother broke her back.

Two firefighters were also injured battling the blaze that caused an estimated $670,000 in property damage.
