Woman Says She Was Threatened By Man Accused Of Killing NH Police Officer

BRENTWOOD, NH (CBS) – The man suspected of killing Brentwood Police Officer Stephen Arkell had never been in trouble with police before.

On Monday afternoon, a neighbor called 911 to report a loud domestic dispute between Michael Nolan and his father Walter. Police say Michael Nolan shot and killed Officer Arkell when he responded. The home later caught fire and exploded.

WBZ-TV's Joe Shortsleeve spoke with a former girlfriend of Michael Nolan.

"We were you know towards the end of our relationship and I wanted out," Kelley Forest said. "He ended up pulling a gun on me and that pretty much solidified the end of my relationship with him."

Kelley Forest of Methuen said she broke up with Nolan after dating for three or four years in the 1990's.

"He wasn't working while we were together and he drank a lot," Forest said.

Erica Thompson knew the Nolans when they lived in an upscale Raymond, New Hampshire neighborhood about five years ago. She says everybody loved Michael's father Walter.

"I hear Walter is OK which is just wonderful news," Thompson said. "Just a sweet old guy, kind of like the grandfather figure."

"Michael stayed pretty much indoors, I didn't see too much of Michael," said Peter, another longtime neighbor. "He just kind of stayed indoors, he was I don't know, he'd listen to the scanner a lot, he did stuff in his room I never really met him."

Neighbors say that recently they had heard yelling between the father and son, but the police were never involved.
