Three-Alarm Fire Rips Through Malden House

MALDEN (CBS) – A three-alarm fire ripped through a Malden home early Friday morning on Converse Avenue.

Fire Chief Jack Colangeli said firefighters responded just after 6:30 a.m. and found heavy fire in a third-floor attic bedroom.

The chief said firefighters determined the flames broke out in the basement and then engulfed all three floors.

"The guys had a tough job getting through it," Colangeli said.

Five people lived in the home. The chief said four of them escaped without injuries and the fifth person, who lived in the attic apartment, was not home at the time.

One Saugus firefighter was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Colangeli said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
