Boston Marathon Bombing Survivor Kensky Wins Women's Handcycle Race

BOSTON (CBS) - Jessica Kensky crossed the 2014 Boston Marathon finish line with a time of 2:14:13, good enough for first place in the small field of two that was the Women's Handcycle division.

A boast-worthy feat to finish the race, for Kensky just participating was a monumental accomplishment.

She and her husband, Patrick Downes, were standing near the finish line on April 15, 2013. The newlyweds both lost their left legs in the Boston Marathon bombings.

As Kensky came down Boylston Street today, she was locked hand-in-hand with Downes, who was participating in the Men's Handcycle race and also finished with a time of 2:14:13, putting him in 17th place.

Last week, Downes offered a passionate tribute to the first responders, families, strangers and the Red Sox on the anniversary of the attacks.

"We chose to love and that has made all the difference," he told the audience, before paying tribute to the four "guardian angels."

"Peace. That will be their lasting message to us," Downes said.
