Pedroia Gets 'Great News' On Wrist

BOSTON (CBS) -- It sounds like the Red Sox have avoided what could have been their biggest loss of the young season.

Second baseman Dustin Pedroia told WBZ-TV's Dan Roche that he received "great news" on his left wrist, likely meaning Pedroia will avoid a stint on the disabled list.

Other reports say Pedroia does not have a fracture in the wrist, but he will undergo further testing in the coming days.

Pedroia injured his wrist back on April 4, when Milwaukee Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez slid into him trying to break up a double play. He played through discomfort for over a week before being a scratch from Sunday night's loss in New York, and returned to Boston on Monday to have the wrist examined by team doctors.

Pedroia was batting .421 prior to that play at second, and has gone just 5-for-36 at the plate since. His average has dipped to .236, and he is hitting just .111 over the last six games.

Pedroia has only been on the DL three times over his eight-year career. He broke his foot in June 2010 and returned to play two games in August before returning to the DL, and also landed on the list in July 2012 with a bad thumb. He also played the entire 2013 season with a different thumb injury after injuring the digit on Opening Day.

It's unclear when Pedroia will be able to return to action, but it appears the Red Sox dodged what could have been a big loss early in the season. Pedroia is one of the team's leaders, both on and off the diamond, and his absence added to the loss of third baseman Will Middlebrook, who has been on the DL since April 6 with a calf injury, would have further strained the depth in the infield.

Jonathan Herrera started for Pedroia on Sunday night, going 1-for-4 at the plate.
