NH Police Officer Charged With Assaulting Suspect

SEABROOK, N.H. (AP) — A grand jury has indicted a Seabrook police officer who was caught on tape slamming a suspect's head into a concrete wall.

The state attorney general said Thursday that Mark Richardson was charged with assault in connection with the Nov. 11, 2009 incident at the Seabrook police station. In surveillance video, Richardson is seen shoving then-19-year-old Michael Bergeron into a wall.

Bergeron had been arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated and drug possession. Other officers said he was struggling and uncooperative when Richardson forced him into the wall.

A second officer, Adam Laurent, sprayed Bergeron with pepper spray. He was not indicted.

Richardson faces up to 2 to 5 years in prison and a $4,000 fine if convicted. His lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
