BOSTON (CBS) — The Boston Bruins have recalled forward Ryan Spooner from the Providence Bruins on an emergency basis, GM Peter Chiarelli announced on Tuesday.
Head coach Claude Julien revealed the reason for Spooner’s call-up, telling reporters that Carl Soderberg’s wife is pregnant and due soon.
“If he had to leave quickly there, we want to make sure we don’t get caught without an extra body up front,” Julien said.
Spooner will join the club for practice on Tuesday and travel with the team for Wednesday night’s game in Detroit.
Boston’s second-round pick in 2010, Spooner has racked up 11 assists in 22 games with Boston this season. In total, the forward has played in 26 NHL games for Boston since 2012.
Spooner tallied 10 goals and 30 assists in 42 games for Providence this season and was named to the AHL All-Star team in January. His 40 points are good for fifth on the team and his plus-11 rating is tied for third on the P-Bruins.
The 21-year-old Spooner has skated in 109 AHL games with Providence from 2010 to 2014, totaling 30 goals and 74 assists for 104 points.
The Bruins currently sit nine points ahead of the Pittsburgh Penguins on top of the Eastern Conference with just seven games to go in the regular season, and will likely start to rest some regulars ahead of the postseason.
