CAMPTON, N.H. (AP) — Officials at New Hampshire’s White Mountain National Forest are seeking applicants for the fourth annual Artist-in-Residence program.

Under the program, one artist will be chosen to live on or near forest property for at least three weeks to gain inspiration and share their talents at weekly public sessions.

The program is open to professional and emerging artists. Applicants can be performing or visual artists, composers, writers or craftspeople.

The program is run in conjunction with the Arts Alliance of Northern New Hampshire. Most of the artist’s living expenses and other costs are covered.

Deadline for applying is March 25.

The program began in 2011, in honor of the 100th anniversary of the passage of the Weeks Act that enabled the federal government to purchase and conserve land and led to the creation of the White Mountain National Forest and 50 other parks.

Forest officials say the goal of the artist-in-residence program is to use art and creative expression to explore the many ways in which people relate to the forest.

The selected artist will take up residency sometime between July and September.

Because this year marks the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act, the artist will be asked to focus their exploration and artwork on one of the six designated wilderness areas within the White Mountain National Forest: The Great Gulf, Pemigewasset, Presidential Range/Dry River, the Sandwich Range and Wild River in New Hampshire, and Caribou-Speckled Mount in Maine.
