Report: Patriots Talk Contract With Edelman

BOSTON (CBS) -- The New England Patriots discussed a new contract with wide receiver Julian Edelman on Thursday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Edelman hauled in a career-high 105 receptions in 2013 and is set to become an unrestricted free agent next week. He also set career highs with 1, 056 yards and six touchdowns, adding another 16 receptions and a touchdown during New England's playoff run.

Last season was Edelman's fifth in the NFL after being a seventh-round pick by New England in 2009. Not only was he Tom Brady's favorite target in 2013, Edelman also served as New England's primary punt returner, returning 35 of 36 punts for 374 yards (Danny Amendola had the only other punt return by a Patriot in 2013).

After signing a one-year deal with New England last off-season for just over $1 million, there's little doubt the 27-year-old is in line to get a pretty hefty pay raise this year.

Free agency in the NFL is set to open Tuesday at 4 pm.
