Bruins Acquire Andrej Meszaros For Third-Round Pick
BOSTON (CBS) -- Peter Chiarelli has made his move to boost the Boston blue line, acquiring Flyers defenseman Andrej Meszaros in the final hour before the NHL's trade deadline.
The Bruins will send a third-round pick to Philadelphia in exchange for Meszaros.
Chiarelli said it will be up to head coach Claude Julien to determine if Meszaros will be in the lineup on Thursday night against Washington.
Mezaros, a 28-year-old left shot D-man, is in his ninth NHL season. He has five goals and 12 assists to go with a plus-1 rating in 38 games for Philadelphia this year. In his career, he's posted 54-165-219 totals and a plus-34 rating in 571 games.
The Bruins were in need of help on defense after the loss of Dennis Seidenberg to a torn knee and the nagging injury that's kept Adam McQuaid off the ice.
Meszaros is in the final year of his six-year, $24 million deal, which he signed prior to the 2008-09 season.
Meszaros played with Zdeno Chara and Slovakia during the Sochi Olympics. He didn't register a point and was an even rating while averaging roughly 19 minutes per game in his four games played.
Chiarelli said his main intention on deadline day was to add depth, which is something the Meszaros acquisition accomplishes. He said he also laid the groundwork for potential future deals that will transpire in the summer and fall.
As for the team's lack of star power on deadline day?
"It never seems like we're an anointed winner of trade deadline day," Chiarelli said, "and I'm fine with that."
