Gresh & Zo: Torey Krug Provides His Key To The Game For Team USA To Beat Canada

BOSTON (CBS) – Bruins defenseman Torey Krug was not chosen to be a part of the 2014 United States men’s ice hockey team, but just because he was given a two week break doesn’t mean he wasn’t focused on the task at hand.

“Those guys that went over to the Olympics had a job to do over there, and us guys that stayed back have a job to make sure we’re ready for when the NHL season resumes. Part of that is making sure you’re ready mentally, and for me it was getting away from the game for a bit.”

Krug “just kind of hung around” while on vacation in Mexico and only recently started watching the Olympic games upon his return, adding, “It looks like a lot of fun and I’m looking forward to the game tomorrow.”

He of course is not referring to Finland vs. Sweden – the Michigan native can’t wait for Team USA vs. Canada.

Krug provided his key to the game Thursday afternoon on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Gresh & Zolak program.

“The big thing for the U.S. team is taking away time and space. Canada has so many guys that can do special things with the puck, and on that big ice surface that’s tough to do. It’s going to be interesting.

“The game will be won in the defensive zone for the U.S. and as long as Jonathan Quick keeps playing the way he is and the defense takes away their forwards’ time it’ll be a lot of fun to watch.”

Those of us from afar that have been watching the games can’t help but notice the chemistry of the Americans, something that’s not lost on Torey Krug either.

Consistency has been Team USA’s biggest asset.

“I would say it’s the consistency. They can throw any line out there and get good two-way hockey. They look like more of a team than an All-Star team and it starts with the consistency.”

“Do you get chuckles seeing Patrice Bergeron as a fourth line winger?” Scott Zolak asked.
