Gomes Trims Beard, Full Shave Coming Before Spring Training

BOSTON (CBS) - Jonny Gomes' famous beard is nearly gone.

Gomes said just a few weeks ago he would be shaving off the beard that covered his face for nearly all of the 2013 season, giving him a fresh start to a new year.

"Baseball season is not like a cookie cutter," Gomes told reporters last month. "You can't win last year. I mean, it's a clean slate, you know."

That process began on Monday. While he still has a bit of facial hair left, most of Gomes' beard fell victim to a Norelco trimmer.

The shaving company posted a Youtube video on Monday, showing Gomes using its new laser-guided trimmer to create a variety of beard styles. In the end, Gomes walks away from his bathroom mirror without a mustache, and most of his scruffy beard gone.

Gomes will finish the job in the coming weeks, but don't worry about his losing any leftover magic from the 2013 World Series Champion season. Gomes showed off his new tattoo last week: a fully bearded Gomes riding a duck boat, holding the World Series Trophy in one hand while flexing and showing off a '13 on his right arm.

Gomes will have a few more days with the facial hair he has left. Position players do not have to report to Fort Myers, Florida until February 18, with Boston's first full-squad workout on February 20.
