BOSTON (CBS) – Mike’s Pastry, a 67-year-old Italian bakery in Boston’s North End, has received unanimous approval from the Cambridge Board of Zoning Appeal to open in Harvard Square. Mike’s Pastry had already signed a lease for 11 Dunster Street.

Michael Mercogliano’s stepson, Joseph Papa, tells me that the family agreed it was time to honor his name by expanding to a second location.

Papa says the secret to running a successful family business for almost seven decades is not to take anything that’s said in the store to heart.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030’s Anthony Silva reports

“(Mike) absolutely adored the store, and he would tell you, ‘My business is business, it has nothing to do with you as a child, or your mother as my wife,'” according to Papa.

Mike’s Pastry is widely known for its homemade cannoli, filled with everything from chocolate chip to pistachio.
