BOSTON (CBS) — A Dorchester resident is believed to have shot and killed an armed and masked gunman after two suspects broke into his apartment on Esmond St. about 9:45 a.m. Wednesday morning.

The two men tried to flee, but police say one died of a gunshot wound running for his life and collapsing on the stoop outside the building.

"I could hear sirens, screaming and hollering and that was it," said a neighbor who did not want to be identified.

A second suspect took off and was captured a block away after a brief foot chase with police.

"I just heard them telling the person to get down, get down. I was sleeping and I jumped straight out of bed."

The body of the fleeing invader was taken away in the afternoon by the medical examiner, and a vehicle was also removed. A neighbor says it appears both the resident and the suspects knew each other.

The resident was also taken into custody for questioning but has not been charged as police try to determine if he had a license to carry the gun. The outburst of violence has not been seen in the neighborhood in some time.

"It's been quiet, I work late at night and it's been quiet I haven't seen anything," said the neighbor.
