Pink Bows Line Andover Road In Memory Of Slain Danvers High Teacher

ANDOVER (CBS) --- For more than a mile on Dascomb Road, every mailbox has a pink bow in honor of murdered Danvers High School teacher Colleen Ritzer.

"You know when people suffer a tragedy, time takes a lot of the discomfort away but not when you lose a child like this," said next-door neighbor and longtime family friend Mary Duffy.

It was Duffy's idea to distribute pink ribbons to 54 neighbors on Dascomb Road, asking her neighbors to display the ribbons on their mailboxes as a tribute to the Ritzers. Pink was Colleen's favorite color.

"I just got the idea that maybe it would give them some support and comfort to see the pink ribbons on mailboxes up and down the street," said Duffy.

It looks like everyone complied.

"It was just a great gesture of coming together," said neighbor Rich O'Connell.

Another neighbor, Diane Shanahan, said, "This is just a small token that we can do for this family and we will continue to support them."

Ritzer was allegedly murdered in a school bathroom by a student in her math class.

Her body was found in the woods behind the school.

Fourteen-year-old Philip Chism is charged with murder in her death.

He has pleaded not guilty.  There's still no word on a motive in the case.

WBZ-TV's Michael Rosenfield contributed to this report.
