Milford Town Workers Miss Mega Millions Jackpot By One Number

MILFORD (CBS) - All of the workers in the Town of Milford Assessor's office were at work this week. They will be for a while because of the Mega Millions winnings that weren't.

"I called into the office on my way into work and my assistant said to me we got five of the six numbers and I'm going cha-ching cha-ching!" said Priscilla Hogan.

Thinking they'd missed the jackpot, but still hit some big bucks, she asked. "I said really? What does that mean? And she says five thousand dollars. And I said, five thousand dollars?"

Her co-workers had a similar reaction. Maria Morias was sure she and her friends would be splitting a million dollars.

Forty workers from Milford Town Hall all went in together to buy tickets. They got five numbers right, but they were the wrong five numbers.

Because they got four of the numbers plus the Mega Millions number, the ticket was worth only $5000. Split 40 ways, that's $118.75 per person.

They're not complaining. "It's $118.75 I didn't have yesterday," Morias said.

Still, it's hard not to think about what might have been. If their ticket had a 31 instead of a 17, they'd all be millionaires.

Hogan joked to a Town Supervisor, "do you realize you almost lost the whole staff of the Town Hall?"

"I don't know if we're lucky or unlucky, you know. It's a fine line," added Rebecca Alger.

All three women said they'd buy something special with their winnings, including more lottery tickets. "We had a lot of laughs and we're looking for the next big pot to join in on," Hogan said.
