Springfield Police Find Large Marijuana Business

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Springfield police say they have broken up a marijuana growing and drug distribution operation run by a married couple in their home.

A department spokesman says investigators executing a search warrant on Wednesday night found 622 marijuana plants in various stages of growth in the basement of the duplex that had been turned into a single-family home. Their estimated worth is more than $3 million.

Police say they also found 158 oxycodone pills, bags of hashish and more than $17,000 in cash inside a safe.

Police arrested 34-year-old Damaen Melbourne on drug charges.

His wife, Nicole, was not arrested so she could care for their children, but police are seeking a criminal complaint against her for the same charges. It's not known if they have a lawyer.
