Boston University Eliminates Wrestling Program
BOSTON (CBS) - It's the last period for Boston University wrestling. The team will take to the mat for the last time at the end of the season.
The university will no longer sponsor wrestling at the varsity level. For head coach Carl Adams, the news is devastating to him and his team. "To have it stripped away after being here for 33 years its difficult," coach Adams said.
On Friday night Penn State University, which is the top-ranked wrestling program in the country, is in town to lend their support. The Nittany Lions along with former BU wrestlers like Art Donahue are not giving up the fight to keep the program alive. "This rally is all about trying to convince the administration that they have made a bad decision in deciding to terminate wrestling at end of the season," Donahue said.
In a statement, BU Athletic Director Mike Lynch said, "I understand the impact this will have on our staff and students. However, we have to strategically use our resources in the most efficient and effective manner, and the decision to move forward without wrestling, though difficult, is the right decision for Boston University."
The wrestling program at BU has been around since 1969. At the end of the season it will come to an end. Coach Adams says his goal now is to keep his players focused and positive. "We have to stay focused. And saving the program is a battle that other groups have to fight," coach Adams said.
The school says current students who are on scholarships will be able to keep their scholarships for the remainder of their academic careers at BU.
