Boychuk On Toucher & Rich: Rookie Or Vet, Anyone Can Speak Up On Bruins

BOSTON (CBS) - The Boston Bruins have their first meeting with the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night, but luckily have a few days off before to ease some bumps and bruises.

The Bruins' blue-line continues to be banged up, with Adam McQuaid and Torey Krug both listed as "day-to-day" after getting banged up in Saturday's win over Columbus.

Boston has had to overcome some injuries to their defense in the last few weeks, but haven't really missed a beat thanks to a glut of defensemen in the system. Kevan Miller, who filled in nicely last week when McQuaid and Dennis Seidenberg were sidelined, was recalled again on Tuesday on an emergency basis.

Defenseman Johnny Boychuk joined 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich on Wednesday, and said he and his fellow defensemen feel confident in their group no matter who is out there.

"It's really good to see for us because when you have good guys get hurt, guys come in and step in. They fill the role and play extremely well, and it makes it easier for us to play with each other because we're comfortable; we know (whoever fills in is) going to give it his all every game."

Boychuk said they often play with different defensive partners during practice, so when it comes time for that to happen in-game it really is not an issue.

"The last couple of years we've had the seven guys that we have right now come in and play with each other. We switch partners all the time so it's not that bad [when it happens in a game]," said Boychuk. "When you see Kevan come in and play the way he did, it's pretty easy. When you have players like that on defense and you can trust them all, it's pretty easy to play."

Boychuk also opened up about the inside look fans are getting with "Behind The B," which offers a behind the scenes look into the Bruins organization. On the most recent episode, to the surprise of many, head coach Claude Julien and Patrice Bergeron were heard using some rather salty language.

"Sometimes you don't realize what you're saying, and that's probably what's going on with all the swearing. We're not princes here," said Boychuk. "When you get intense you tend to have that kind of talk in the dressing room. You need that fire. For the fans to see a different perspective, it's a nice touch to see it on the show."

Fans got to see forward Chris Kelly speak up and show his off-ice leadership on the recent episode. Boychuk said the dressing room is a very open place, and if someone has something to say, everyone will listen.

"That's what makes us a great team. Whether you're a rookie, second-year or a ten-year veteran, if you have something to say there's no problem for you to step up and say it and guys will listen," said Boychuk "If you have a valid point -- if you don't then they'll just make fun of you."

One question he wouldn't answer was if anyone turns it on for the "Behind The B" cameras.

"I'm not going there, no chance," he said with a chuckle. "Nice try, though."
