Local Winter Markets To Buy Organic Food In Boston
Bostonians don’t get to see a lot of green in the winter months, but that doesn’t mean they should stop eating green, local, healthy foods. According to MassGrown, Massachusetts is home to about 42 farmers’ markets that continue operating all year long. This is an essential part of creating a sustainable food system and supporting our local economy. The following winter farmers’ markets are located in or very close to Boston.
Dorchester Winter Farmers’ Market
6 Norfolk St.
Dorchester, MA 02124
Dorchester’s winter market is one of the most popular “off-season” markets in the state. It is a sub-project of the Dorchester Community Food Co-op. The Co-op’s mission is to build a healthy, sustainable and economically viable community, and there is no better way to promote healthy living than by making sure fresh, local produce is available even in the dead of winter.
Egleston Farmers Market
45 Brookside Ave.
Boston, MA 02130
Not only does this market provide fresh local food all year round, it also collects compost from area residents. Egleston Farmers Market partnered with Greenovate Boston to collect compost as part of its pilot campaign. Unfortunately, the pilot program is temporarily halted, but the market managers are hoping to reinstate compost collection again soon. Follow the program on Twitter for the latest updates at #CompostBos.
Brookline Winter Farmer’s Market
318 Harvard St.
Brookline, MA 02445
Another popular winter farmers’ market takes place every weekend in Brookline. In addition to fresh fruits and vegetables, there are also baked goods and other homemade food items available. This past week, there was even fresh pasta for sale!
Cambridge Winter Farmers Market
5 Callender St.
Cambridge, MA 02139
The Cambridge Winter Farmers Market is the most established winter market in the area. It is easily accessible from public transportation and has a very informative website which makes it an easy decision for Bostonians to head across the river to do their produce shopping. Local craftspeople also sell their goods at the market – so why not get your holiday shopping done while picking out some delicious in-season root vegetables?
Medford Winter Farmers Market
116 Riverside Ave.
Medford, MA 02155
Inspired by the much-loved summer market, Medford is opening a winter market this year for the first time. Pay a visit to get the freshest local food around. Open Thursday from 3-7pm you can enjoy baked goods, fresh produce, cheese, coffee, wine and much more.
